What you Need to Know When You Don't Have a Green Thumb

Are you getting enough sleep each night, or having problems staying asleep? If the answer is ‘No’, then perhaps adding a few plants to the bedroom can help. There are some plants that can help you get a better sleep. Not only can plants help with sleeping patterns but they also add beautiful living, natural colour to your room.
One of the more popular plant choices when it comes to helping you sleep better is lavender. Lavender is one of the easiest scents to recognize and is a well known aid for relaxation. It has shown to lower your heart rate, blood pressure, and overall stress levels which make it a great candidate for helping you sleep. Its scent is also known for helping you reach a deeper sleep. Lavender likes a warm sunny window, but if you don’t have that in your bedroom you can always bring it to your room at night and return it to a sunny spot in the morning.

Another plant to help you sleep better is the Snake Plant. This plant is a natural air purifier that emits oxygen at night, which goes a long way in helping you get a restful night. It also helps to remove various chemicals in the air, such as formaldehyde which is mos commonly found in hairspray. Snake plants are one of the easiest to plants to care for. They prefer a room with bright light but will do quite well in indirect light as well.

If you have very little natural light in your room, then consider a Peace Lily. Peace lilies tolerate low light very well and are one of those easy to care for plants, that are ideal for the bedroom. NASA reported that a single plant can increase a room’s humidity by up to 5% which can help relieve dry noses and throats. Low humidity is known to cause dry skin and hair, as well as allowing viruses and germs to thrive. By adding a peace lily to your bedroom you can increase the humidity and breathe cleaner air all night long, as they also filter out harmful toxins.

A plant that has many great attributes is the Aloe Vera. It is well known for its medicinal properties, that can help heal burns, scrapes, cuts, insect bites, and relieve dry skin. Aloe Vera plants are an excellent plant to purify the air. They produce oxygen at night making it a great plant for the bedroom. It prefers a bright, sunny window, and requires very little care. Be careful with the watering as they prefer to go dry between waterings. Most Aloe Vera plants are killed due to overwatering.

Spider plants are considered one of NASA’s top ranking air cleaners. These plants can clear up to 90% of airborne pollutants in your home. They also absorb odours and fumes which improve overall air quality. Better air quality means that you will be better able to breathe at night, giving you a better sleep. A low maintenance plant, Spider plants will grow in low or indirect light, but do best when hanging in front of a window.

One other plant worth mentioning is English Ivy. These plants are said to be able to remove up to 94% of airborne mold from the air and help people who have problems with allergies or asthma. English Ivy prefer bright, indirect light but will tolerate lower light levels. They can be used as a hanging plant but look equally as beautiful as a trailing plant along a shelf.
